From skiing to skydiving to jet boating to fishing and relaxing – we have something to cater for all tastes from the adrenaline junkies to the families.
This winter has proved to be a goodie as we have had a great conditions on the mountain. Top this off with glorious sunny days and you have great conditions for all to enjoy!
So, what should you do in Taupo? The list is long, so below is a littler taster of what Great Lake Taupo has to offer!
Here in Taupo, we are only one hour away from Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand’s largest ski field which is also an active volcano. The conditions are currently ideal with a great base and glorious sunshine! You even get to see both coast lines from Napier to Taranaki when you ski! Most of the staff here at Skydive Taupo enjoy spending their days off at the mountain.
If skiing isn’t your thing then you can still enjoy the fantastic scenery by signing up for NZ’s best one day hike. The Tongaririo Alpine Crossing is a guided walk across Mount Tongariro , which is an active volcano . I have tackled this hike a few times and the view is definitely worth the wait! Just make sure you take enough supplies as there is no café at the top!
After a hard day on the mountain why not stop off at one of Taupo’s many natural hot pools and enjoy a soak in the hot water spa’s! If you want some privacy there are private pools or you can enjoy the experience in the communal pools. Our team love heading to De Bretts after a days jumping in winter – as truly warms the bones!
If the mountain isn’t your thing then how about fishing? Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in Australasia and is actually bigger than Singapore! You can hire a boat onto the lake for a days fishing or you can have you own guide and take to the rivers for a spot of fly fishing! Which ever you decide there is plenty of Trout to go round, although I have never had much luck in catching them. http://www.taupolakeadventures.com/
Once you have caught your trout on your fishing trip you can take it to Jolly Goodfellows where they will prepare and cook it for you. Infact the only way to eat Trout in Taupo is to catch your own! Get to eat your hard earnt dinner overlooking the stunning Lake Taupo and mountains . By far the best view in town. Being a pom myself, this is my local bar as they have lots of yummy beers on tap, including Guiness.
I couldn’t exactly write a to do list on Taupo without adding skydiving to it because if you’re an adrenaline junkie, then Skydive Taupo is the right place for you!! We skydive all year round, so Yes, its cold in winter , but the views are second to none (especially from 15,000 feet). Just make sure you put on a few extra layers!
You can see both coasts from 15,000 feet from Napier to Mount Taranaki. You will also get a birds eye view over the lake and the surrounding Tongariro National Park. If you jump with Skydive Taupo you even get to jump out of a pink plane as well as enjoying a courtesy pick up and drop off service in our limo!

Whatever you choose to do we can guarantee that you will love it here as Taupo has something for everyone at every budget! This is only a taster of what we have to offer! I could go on…. Huka falls, kayaking, parasailing, horse trekking, cruise on the lake, hiking and mountain biking…..the list is long! Come check us out…we guarantee you wont want to leave!
